10 Questions with Julia Sutherland

Julia comes to us from King’s College with seven years of experience in the marketing and public relations world.

Take a few moments to get to know her and be sure to say, “hello!” the next time you see her in the office.

1. Where Have You Lived & Where Do You Live Currently?

I grew up in Canandaigua, New York, and spent much of my adult life in the Rochester area.

I recently relocated to Albany from Northeastern Pennsylvania.

2. What Has Your Professional Work Experience Been Like So Far in Your Career?

I started working at Soleo Communications right out of college as a Digital Marketing Specialist. I loved this role because it was extremely relevant to my degree.

It allowed me to really immerse myself in all things digital media — social media, blogs, SEO, etc.

Most recently I worked at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, as the Assistant Director of Public Relations. I was in charge of running the College’s organic and paid social media strategy.

This role completely changed how I look at using social media to build and maintain relationships.

3. What Inspires Your Work & How do You Stay Up to Date with Trends?

I think I find inspiration in having conversations with people. Finding out what someone truly wants and/or needs makes me feel accountable for achieving that goal for them.

For brands to reach people on social media, we must first know who our target audience is. What are their likes and dislikes? What do they care about? Who are their favorite influencers? Talking to people is the best way to find out this information and add personality to social media content.

The social media world is constantly changing. It seems like every year, there is a new social media platform that users are flocking to.

To stay up to date with social media trends and news, I look to professional outlets, like Social Media Today and TechCrunch.

4. Do You Have Any Hidden Talents or Hobbies?

I can quote pretty much every line from the Christmas episodes of ‘The Office.’ Fa la la la la la la ka-ching.

I also love reading.

5. What is Your Favorite Holiday?

Thanksgiving because I’m a glutton.

6. Do You Have a Favorite Sport or Team?

I love watching hockey and football. I prefer to watch baseball in person, except when the Cubs won the World Series.

My favorite teams are the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and Chicago Cubs.

7. What Genre of Music Do You Like & What Was the Best Concert You’ve Attended?

I honestly love everything except metal. Lately, I’ve been listening to Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, and The Weeknd, depending on the day.

My favorite concert was probably Zac Brown Band or Young Money at SPAC in, I think, 2008.

8. What is Your Favorite Movie? Why?

The Green Mile. It has a fantastic cast and makes me cry every time even though I know what’s coming.

9. Do You Have Any Pets?

Yes, a golden retriever named Dailey. I love her so, so much, and talk to her in a really annoying voice.

10. What Book Would You Recommend to a Friend? Why?

I have a few that I would recommend, and it depends on the genre.

Historical Fiction: Pillars of the Earth series. Ken Follett is an unbelievable writer, and the characters are awesome in every book.

Thriller: The Shining and Dr. Sleep. I love Stephen King, and I’ve read approximately 20 of his books, these two are my favorite.

Biography: Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall. It’s a timely biography that paints a really good picture of homelessness, race, and faith in America. It will definitely make you laugh and cry.
